The EJU Beyond Limits: Exploring Adaptive Judo – 1st Scientific-Professional Conference and Practical Demonstrative Activities of Adapted Judo

THEME OF THE CONFERENCE

Intellectual-relational disability is a widespread condition, which appears to be growing among the younger generations and represents approximately 80% of the disabilities worldwide. Scientific research has shown that participation in sporting activities and Judo programs can have social, salutogenic and well-being benefits for people with disabilities, especially during the developmental age.

Keeping this evidence in mind, the Italian Judo Wrestling Karate and Martial Arts Federation (FIJLKAM), in collaboration with the European Judo Union (EJU) and the University of Rome “Foro Italico”, organized the Conference “Beyond Limits: Exploring Adapted Judo – 1st Scientific-Professional Conference and Practical Demonstrative Activities of Adapted Judo”.

The conference was held on the 8th and 9th of April 2024 at the FIJLKAM Olympic Center, via dei Sandolini 79, 00122 Lido di Ostia, Rome. In the morning of April 8th (10.30/13.30) was presented the scientific results of Adapted Judo for people with intellectual-relational disabilities in the Aula Magna. In the afternoon (15.00/18.00) presentations from Judo experts and Coaches who work in this area. On April 9th at the PalaFijlkam a practical demonstration of the FIJLKAM projects “Katautism” and “Simone’s Adventure” and a demonstration of an Adapted Judo competition with the new EJU regulation was held.

The Conference aimed to compare the scientific results of research activities together with the practical experiences of Adapted Judo Coaches to outline the best practices that can promote sporting accessibility and social inclusion of people with intellectual-relational disabilities
